WASHINGTON (CNN) --The Food and Drug Administration today approved a prescription drug for the treatment of arthritis pain in adults. The drug,, also known as celecoxib, was approved by the FDA for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which is an inflammation process in the joints.
The approval came about as the government's arthritis program, which has included some arthritis patients, began to show its own positive results in a new study, which was completed by the agency in March. "We are proud to have the approval of Celebrex for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis," said Dr. Mark Seeborg, an FDA investigator in the study.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the world. It occurs when a joint becomes inflamed, and it can be painful. It causes inflammation in the body, and may cause pain and swelling. Celebrex, which has been approved for use by more than 1 million arthritis patients in over 100 countries, is the drug for arthritis. Celebrex is a short-acting nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain and swelling.
The Food and Drug Administration's decision was made following several other studies, which showed that Celebrex is effective in reducing pain and inflammation in arthritis patients. The study found that taking celecoxib twice a day reduced arthritis-related pain by 40 percent, which was equivalent to over 200 million people in the United States.
In the study, Celebrex was used in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 200,000 people, over three months. Celebrex is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is an oral NSAID, which is taken by mouth at least twice a day. The treatment lasts up to 12 hours. Celebrex can be taken with or without food.
The researchers found that celecoxib was effective in reducing pain and inflammation in arthritis patients. The drug was also associated with improved osteoarthritis-related pain and inflammation.
"We have a long history of successful clinical trials of NSAIDs like celecoxib," said Dr. John D. Lechleiter, an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. "This drug has had several beneficial effects and has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for arthritis. But we are pleased that Celebrex has shown efficacy in reducing pain and inflammation. So, in addition to the benefits we have seen in clinical trials, we are looking at ways to improve the use of this drug in patients with arthritis."
